I did the similar thing on my old dodge 1500 with a 5.9 amd individual coil packs all mounted together rather than right on the plugs like most new engines are. I had 4 of 8 right thankfully the computer told me which ones where firing out of order.

The really weird thing was it only had a slight miss at idle, but it wouldn't rev at all.

well it depends on which ones where switched. If he had companion cylinders switched then it wouldn't make much of a miss at out. Just no power. I too have done this....on my 2.3 mustang I had 2, 3 switched so they fired on the exhaust/intake stroke instead of the compression/power stroke. Idled nice and smooth but just had no power.
did this on my 44o .did relize that the cam i bought had a 3 5 swap to smooth out the idle.after 2 days of fighting with it it took five minutes to read the card and fix it
